Individual Pipa String (Dunhuang Type)
 
The strings of a pipa, often referred to as steel strings, are typically made from high-carbon steel. This material helps provide the tension and durability needed for the strings while producing a clear and bright tone.
In addition to steel strings, the pipa can also use nylon-wound strings or silk strings. These strings are usually made from nylon or silk and often have a layer of fine steel wire or other metal materials wound around them. These types of strings produce a softer tone and are suitable for different styles of playing. Traditionally, silk strings were more common, but in modern pipa performance, steel strings are becoming increasingly popular due to their clearer sound, which is well-suited for solo performances and most contemporary repertoires.
